Richard Marin: How to Combat Common Hair Mistakes

by Richard Marin December 21, 2014

The most common hair mistake I see is over-styling! Remember K.I.S.S.! With the proper cut for you and the correct products and tools, maintaining your hair will be a pleasure. People often remember people for their hair, how it's cut, the health and the sheen of it. I know it's my work, but I often hear people say they didn't recognize someone because they changed their hair. Be gentle to your hair, keep overuse of product to a minimum, ease up on teasing or over chemically processing and give it the ionic tools it deserves to keep it as healthy as possible. I'm all for a good all-out glam look, but keep that for special occasions. Keep your day-to-day life hair beautiful and simple, which leaves a long lasting impression.

This especially true for today’s busy women looking for quick and easy ways to turn a day look into a night look. I always recommend what I call "convertible hair" (changeable easy styles). If you wear your hair long and straight to the office or school, in the evening do a ponytail or a loose bun or even a loose French twist. Curly and wavy hair girls can do the opposite because they have natural texture on their side. Try a loose bun by day, down and wavy by night. Options are always what you want to strive for with minimum maintenance.

DIY Golden Globe Red Carpet Looks

Red Carpet Breakdown Tina Fey and Michelle Pfeiffer

Last night's 2012 Golden Globe Awards were not only full of show stopping performances, but breathtaking new looks! Celebrity stylist, Richard Marin, is sharing how he styled two of Hollywood's leading ladies - Tina Fey and Michelle Pfeiffer.

For the 2012 Golden Globes, I went for simple, beautiful blown-out movable hair for Tina Fey.

1. I began my blow dry by applying Creme for Style by Oribe on damp hair.

2. I then used Remington's T|Studio Pearl Ceramic Professional AC Hair Dryer with a bore bristle round brush to complete the blow-out. Combining the three products gave me the ultimate shine and locked in hair that holds the memory of a blow dry shape, but still allows movement.

3. After blow drying, I sprayed Royal Blowout by Oribe on Tina's blow dried hair.

4. Next I used Remington's new Style Therapy: Keratin Therapy 1 ½" Clip-Free Curling Iron. This sealed in shine, and gave a soft bend in the hair and also blocked out any humidity.

5. To finish I flipped the hair upside down and sprayed Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray by Oribe, flipped hair back into place, and off she went!

To create Michelle Pfeiffer's updo...

1. I sprayed Maximista Thickening Spray by Oribe and flipped her hair forward and blow dried with Remington's T|Studio Pearl Ceramic Professional AC Hair Dryer until hair was completely dry. This gave me maximum volume!

2. I then took 3x4 inch sections of the hair and sprayed Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray by Oribe and used Remington's Style Therapy: Keratin Therapy 1 ½" Clip-Free Curling Iron.

3. Next, I pinned my curls in place until they cooled off. Once cooled, remember to remove pins and shake your hair, A LOT.

4. To give Michelle's hair all over amazing texture, I sprayed Oribe's Dry Texturizing Spray.

5. I pulled her hair back into a low, loose ponytail held with a hair-safe elastic band and double looped the ponytail to create a loose bun.

6. I pinned loose pieces of hair and also pull out pieces of hair around the face to give it a carefree undone look.

7. To finish the style, I spritzed a mist of Superfine Hair Spray by Oribe and she was ready!

We can't wait to what Richard does on Sunday! To create your own award-worthy hair, take a look at this tutorial for Richard's sleek chignon bun worn by our favorite funny gal, Tina Fey, at last year's SAG Awards.

1. Apply a straightening balm to damp hair and blow dry with the Remington T|Studio Pearl Ceramic Professional AC Hair Dryer. Be sure to blow dry bangs at an angle to achieve the swooping effect!

2. Sprits a heat protective spray throughout your hair and curl ends with the Remington T|Studio Pearl Styling Wand, for movement and texture.

3. Backcomb the crown of your head and slowly pull hair back to a low side ponytail.

4. Twist hair around the ponytail base into a bun and place bobby pins. Don't forget the hairspray!

Chic, sleek, and simple! Remember to catch Monday's post for a breakdown of the red carpet looks Richard creates for Tina Fey and Michelle Pfieffer at Sunday's Golden Globes.
